Day-One vs. Graded vs. Guaranteed Issue Final Expense: How to Place Clients
Most final expense products come in three underwriting tiers. Placing a client in the right one is the most important skill at the kitchen table.
Day-one (level) benefit
The full death benefit is payable from the first day the policy is in force, subject to the policy terms. This is the best fit for clients who can answer the health questions favorably.
Graded benefit
For clients with certain health conditions, a graded plan pays a reduced benefit for non-accidental death in the first years, then the full benefit. Each carrier sets its own schedule.
Guaranteed issue
No health questions, so approval does not depend on health. These plans usually have a waiting period for full non-accidental benefits and cost more per dollar of coverage.
How to choose
- Go through each carrier’s health questions with the client and their medication list.
- Check the prescription history the carrier will see, so the application matches.
- Start with the best tier the client honestly qualifies for.
- Explain any waiting period in plain English before the client signs.
Why it matters
Clients placed correctly are more likely to keep their policy, which protects your commissions and your book. Having several carriers lets you match more clients to the right plan.
